This is a company that specialises in luxury private jet and helicopter travel and organisation. In a very competitive industry that relies on the fickleness of the their wealthy clients - celebrities, politicians and business leaders, they have to do and be seen to do the right thing for their clients, especially in these times of increasing environmental awareness. Embracing self generated renewable energy was definitely the way to go, not just for financial and sustainability but to become more attractive to their present and future customers as en environmentally friendly company despite being in the air travel industry.
The property consists of a very large hanger which houses the aircraft for security, maintenance and servicing. The office accommodation has administration as well as customs, a small executive lounge and catering facilities. The building sits within a specialised area servicing a national airport in the UK. The structure itself and their car parking areas gave us plenty of room to play with.
The main remit from the client was to reduce their annual expenditure for electricity - one of their biggest bills to the business. Being able to do so by using renewable sustainable energy sources was a welcome bonus for their socially responsible image - 'being seen to be green' is an excellent PR coup for the company and will certainly be pushed through their marketing division. Their almost instant environmental credentials came at zero cost as a result of their installation, all fully funded by our partners therefore at no capital cost to the client.
After doing aerial surveys and project planning at our expense we put a proposal to them to reduce their annual electricity costs and carbon footprint. Without the need and delays of planning permission, we were able to use the hangar roof to place almost 1,000 solar high efficiency PV panels generating 300 Kw. The system is hard-wired directly into the property providing instant connectivity and energy savings whilst not having to detach from the National Grid completely.
The new energy system provides more than a third of the energy required for the entire building and generates savings of more than £3,000.00 pm from their energy bill, a reduction of £36,000 a year to spend on other things. Over the entire lifetime of their energy contract, after making adjustments for inflation, the overall savings for the company will exceed £ 850,000.00
The capital cost of this whole project was free of charge to the company, no capital expenditure at all - their only requirement during the whole process was to provide their existing energy use data and leave us to do the rest. Becoming a customer enables them to have cheaper cleaner green energy on site for at least the next 20 years at a tariff lower than they could get elsewhere, with no ongoing maintenance repairs, or servicing as such costs are included in the energy contract.
